Paintings by Janetta Deppa

Rooted in the Natural World

About

Janetta is a North Portland–based artist whose work is rooted in a fascination with the natural world. She explores the complex tension between humanity’s relentless drive for advancement, productivity, and expansion paired with our deep reliance on the slow, patient, and tender rhythms of nature. Blending realism with the fantastical, she weaves organic elements into dreamlike, surreal compositions that invite reflection on our place within—and impact upon—the world around us.

Studio Information

  • My work is created in my small Portland home-based studio. I primarily work in oil paint, though I also incorporate acrylics and mixed media, prioritizing secondhand and found materials. I typically utilize multiple thin layers of paint, incorporate lots of glazes, and focus on saturated colors and patterns to accentuate natural elements.

  • All original paintings are one-of-a-kind. Each piece is titled and signed on the back, Unless otherwise noted, original works are unframed. Each piece is finished with a protective layer of Gamvar varnish to ensure colors remain vibrant and each painting surface is protected.

  • I love working with people to bring commissions to life! I find most people request pet portraits, and I always love working to bring your fur babies to life via painting. I’m also happy to talk about commissions outside of pet portraits; for instance, invoking a subject matter, feeling, or color pattern you’re considering.

  • I prioritize the use of archival, non-toxic, and environmentally responsible materials whenever possible, which includes how I select my paints, where and how I source my canvases and other painting surfaces, and how I prep, paint, and finish each piece. I’m happy to provide additional guidance for caring for your original upon request.

  • I’m happy to ship both originals and reproductions. All works are professionally packaged to ensure safe transport and come with tracking information.
